Norman Garcy Yap
Norman is an award-winning actor, writer, and producer who plays the title character in the recently released feature film entitled Sun King, which won BEST ILLINOIS FEATURE at its premiere at the Beloit International Film Festival in February 2020. Norman was also recently honored as a 2020 Artist Grant Award recipient of the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events
In theatre, Norman completed a major 80-performance run playing the lead role of Zhang Lin in TimeLine Theatre's Jeff-Recommended Chicago premiere of the award-winning play Chimerica by Lucy Kirkwood, directed by award-winning director Nick Bowling. Reviewers hailed Norman's performance in this "near-three-hour running time" epic story as "Gutsy...deftly handled...alternatingly charming and heartbreaking...one of the truest things I've seen on stage in a long time." He also recently completed a run at Steppenwolf Theatre as a member of the cast of The Great Leap by Lauren Yee understudying the lead role of Wen Chang.
Norman is grateful to have played co-starring roles on popular TV shows such as NBC’s CHICAGO MED and MAYDAY AIR EMERGENCY. He has played principal roles in national commercials, industrials, and voiceovers. He has been a panelist on panels featuring other prominent Asian Americans, given speeches on how his unique experiences as a career artist can be applied to other walks of life, and been invited multiple times as a guest performance artist and creator at The Art Institute of Chicago.
Having played over sixty roles on Film, TV, and Stage and with roots in classical theatre as well as Second City and IO improv, Norman is a versatile and collaborative actor who specializes in grounding unconventional characters in truth no matter how extreme the given circumstances. He has gotten the most acclaim for playing lonesome outliers with troubled pasts who deflect from their conscience with humor or disdain, (i.e. Asian Woody Harrelson).
Upcoming film releases include The Trafficker, about a human trafficker who is forced to deal with a "package" following an FBI raid. Norman plays the lead title role in this film, which will be a multilingual dramatic film in English and Chinese involving an international cast and crew. It is slated for release in 2021.
On the writing side, Norman is currently developing a series entitled Buddy Southgate. He has co-written produced films that have won awards at film festivals as well as produced plays on stage. Norman also consults on scripts for various projects, increasing the funny, upping the stakes, and creating actor-friendly writing from his unique perspective and extensive experience in front of the camera and on stage.
On the personal side, Norman enjoys traveling, having recently visited New Zealand, Australia, Iceland, and Dubai. He is a certified scuba diver who has dived along the Great Barrier Reef and has also jumped out of a perfectly good plane at 4000 ft by himself, not attached to anyone, and lived to tell the tale. He is a Reelworld E20 Alum and McGill University and Robbins Research Mastery University graduate.
