Richard Perez was born and rasied in Oakland, California. After being bitten by the acting bug in high school, he realized he wanted to become a well-trained actor and moved to New York City. In the thirteen years he lived there, he studied at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute and with Uta Hagen at H.B. Studios, while performing locally and regionally. Also an avid improv performer, he spent many years as a member of New York TheatreSports.
In 1998 he returned to school to attain his MFA in performance at Arizona State University. While there, he had the opportunity to work with Marshall W. Mason and Lanford Wilson.
After serving seven years as the Artistic Director at the Bloomington Playwrights Project Theatre in Indiana, Richard moved to Chicago in 2009 to work at Chicago Dramatists as its first Associate Artistic Director. He has fallen in love with the Windy City and is grateful to be able to work as an actor and director in this extraordinary community.
